Music – Soothing the Soul (and the Heart Too)

soothingmusicThe benefits of music has long been accepted to be soothing to the soul and mind and with some of the latest research, a more solid proof of this link has been established by researches from the Cochrane Systematic Review. The study shows that people who are suffering from heart disease are indeed getting soothed, decreasing blood pressure and anxiety in heart patients. This adds credence to the wise adage that music soothes the soul that is now known as more than an old wives tale. From stress reduction to the soothing physiological effects, all are now being used as a viable approach to augment heart disease treatment.

Heart Disease: Signs and Symptoms (Part 1)

Heart diseases may be acute or chronic. They may be transient, relatively stable, or progressive. They may cause a variety of signs and symptoms that frequently change and/or worsen over time. Chronic heart diseases can have episodes with acutely worsened symptoms; these may resolve (either on their own or with treatment), persist, or even become life-threatening. Patients with early heart disease may experience few or vague symptoms, such as fatigue, shortness of breath with or without effort, dizziness, and/or nausea; however, these symptoms do not indicate the particular type of heart disease present. These symptoms may also be seen with a variety of other conditions.

Abnormal Heart Rhythm

12.jpgThe heart’s rhythm is coordinated by its own electrical system. With each heartbeat, the electrical impulse begins at the sinus (or sinoatrial, SA) node, also called the heart’s natural pacemaker. An irregular heartbeat is an arrhythmia (also called dysrhythmia). Heart rates can also be irregular. A normal heart rate is 50 to 100 beats per minute. Arrhythmias and abnormal heart rates don’t necessarily occur together. Arrhythmias can occur with a normal heart rate, or with heart rates that are slow (called bradyarrhythmias — less than 60 beats per minute). arrhythmias can also occur with rapid heart rates (called tachyarrhythmias — faster than 100 beats per minute).

Problems with Heast Disease

1. Arteriosclerosis (say: ar-teer-ee-oh-skluh-row-sus). ANother terms is “hardening of the arteries”. This means that the arteries have become thickened and are no not anymore as flexible.

2. Atherosclerosis (say: ah-thuh-row-skluh-row-sus). People have a buildup of cholesterol. Fat makes the arteries narrower, such that less blood will be able to flow through. The deposits are called plaque.

3. Angina (say: an-jy-nuh). Pain is felt in the chest, such that the heart is not getting enough blood.

4. Heart attack. This happens when a blood clot or other blockage cut the flow of blood to the heart.

5. Stroke. This happens when part of the brain does not get enough blood because a clot or a blood vessel burst.
